Modern data center facility in Spain representing Amazon's massive AI infrastructure investment

Amazon announced a €33.7 billion ($39.8 billion) total investment in Spain's data center infrastructure, making it the largest technology investment in the country's history. The commitment, announced at Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, adds €18 billion in new funding to the €15.7 billion Amazon detailed in late 2024 — all focused on expanding the AWS Europe (Spain) Region in the Aragón community to support Europe's growing demand for AI and cloud computing.

Investment Scope and Location

The investment centers on Aragón, where Amazon already operates cloud infrastructure across Zaragoza and Huesca provinces. The new commitment extends expansion into the province of Teruel — marking the first time a major tech company has announced data center plans there. Amazon will build new data center campuses across all three Aragón provinces, with the infrastructure designed to support the exponential growth of AI training, inference workloads, and enterprise cloud services across Europe.

The total investment is projected to contribute €31.7 billion to Spain's GDP through 2035, with the Aragón-specific impact estimated at €18.5 billion.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

Amazon estimates the investment will support 29,900 full-time equivalent jobs annually across construction, operations, and the broader supply chain. Of these, 6,700 will be direct Amazon positions in data center operations, construction management, and security. An additional 1,800 jobs will be created in Amazon's supply chain facilities across Aragón, with the remainder in indirect and induced employment across the region.

The company also committed €30 million in community programs through 2035, building on its track record of training over 200,000 Spaniards in digital skills since 2017. Amazon has set a goal of reaching half a million students with AI education programs by 2027.

Strategic Context: The European AI Infrastructure Race

Amazon's Spain investment is part of a global infrastructure build-out driven by surging demand for AI computing power. Major cloud providers are competing to establish data center capacity in Europe, where data sovereignty regulations like GDPR create both challenges and opportunities. Spain's Aragón region offers key advantages: competitive energy costs, available land, a skilled workforce, and a supportive regulatory environment.

"This investment reflects our long-term commitment to Spain and our confidence in Europe's growing demand for advanced AI and cloud computing infrastructure." — Amazon

The announcement follows similar large-scale investments by Microsoft, Google, and Oracle across Europe, as all major cloud providers race to secure capacity for the next wave of AI workloads.

What This Means for Engineers

Amazon's massive European expansion translates to significant hiring in cloud infrastructure, data center engineering, networking, and AI systems. For engineers interested in AWS, cloud architecture, or infrastructure roles, the European build-out creates thousands of new opportunities. Preparing for technical interviews at Amazon or AWS?
