Anthropic Launches Research Institute to Study AI's Societal Impact
Anthropic has launched the Anthropic Institute, a new research body led by co-founder Jack Clark dedicated to studying AI's impact on jobs, economies, and governance, as the company opens its first Washington DC office.
Anthropic Creates Dedicated Research Body for AI's Societal Risks
Anthropic announced on March 11 the launch of the Anthropic Institute, a new research body dedicated to studying and communicating the societal, economic, and legal impact of AI systems. Co-founder Jack Clark will lead the initiative as Head of Public Benefit, bringing together machine learning engineers, economists, and social scientists under one organizational roof.
The Institute combines three existing Anthropic research groups -- the Frontier Red Team, Societal Impacts, and Economic Research -- into a unified body with a broader mandate. Anthropic noted that "AI progress has moved incredibly quickly" and predicted that "far more dramatic progress will follow in the next two years," framing the Institute as preparation for accelerating change.
Research Agenda and Key Appointments
The Anthropic Institute will examine AI's impact across jobs, economies, global risks, AI values, governance, and the emerging challenge of potentially self-improving systems. Several prominent researchers have been brought on board to lead specific research tracks.
Matt Botvinick joins to focus on AI and legal systems, Anton Korinek -- an economist specializing in transformative AI -- will lead work on AI's effects on economic activity, and Zoe Hitzig will contribute economic insights to AI training methodologies. The Institute plans to hire additional talent across analytical and research roles in the coming months.
Washington DC Office and Policy Push
Alongside the Institute launch, Anthropic announced the appointment of Sarah Heck as Head of Public Policy and revealed plans to open its first Washington DC office in spring 2026. The timing is notable -- the announcement comes amid Anthropic's ongoing legal battle with the Pentagon over its supply-chain risk designation, making a DC presence strategically important for both policy advocacy and legal proceedings.
The policy expansion signals Anthropic's intent to engage more directly with lawmakers and regulators on AI governance issues, building on the company's established reputation for safety-focused development. The DC office will serve as a hub for government relations, policy research, and engagement with the growing community of AI policymakers in the capital.
What This Means for Engineers and Job Seekers
The Anthropic Institute's creation highlights growing demand for interdisciplinary roles that bridge AI engineering with economics, policy, and social science. As AI companies increasingly invest in understanding and communicating their technology's societal impact, professionals who can combine technical knowledge with policy analysis, economic modeling, or legal expertise will find expanding career opportunities across the industry.
