Apple Unveils MacBook Air Powered by M5

Apple has officially introduced the new MacBook Air with M5, delivering the largest generational leap in AI performance the product line has ever seen. Announced on March 3, 2026, and available for pre-order since March 4, the refreshed MacBook Air goes on sale March 11, 2026 in 13-inch and 15-inch configurations starting at $1,099 and $1,299 respectively.

The M5 chip at the heart of the update features a 10-core CPU — which Apple claims delivers the world's fastest single-core CPU performance — alongside an upgraded GPU with a Neural Accelerator embedded in each core. The result is a machine purpose-built for the AI workloads that are becoming central to professional and creative workflows.

A Massive AI Performance Leap

The headline figure is a 9.5x improvement in AI task performance compared to the MacBook Air M1, and up to 4x faster than the MacBook Air M4 released just last year. Apple attributes the gain to the Neural Accelerator architecture integrated into the GPU cores, combined with faster unified memory running at 153 GB/s bandwidth — a 28% improvement over M4.

Storage, Connectivity, and Design Upgrades

Apple has doubled the base storage to 512GB with faster SSD technology, configurable up to 4TB. The read/write speeds are 2x faster than the previous generation, addressing a long-standing complaint about the Air's storage performance.

Connectivity receives a notable upgrade with Apple's custom N1 wireless chip, bringing Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 to MacBook Air for the first time. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports now support up to two external displays, eliminating another pain point for multi-monitor users. The 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View support rounds out the hardware improvements.

The MacBook Air retains its fanless aluminum design and now ships in four colors: sky blue, midnight, starlight, and silver. Battery life remains at up to 18 hours, which Apple notes is six hours longer than the last Intel-based MacBook Air.

Apple Intelligence Integration

Running macOS Tahoe with the new Liquid Glass personalization system, the MacBook Air M5 comes loaded with Apple Intelligence features including Live Translation in Messages across languages, Smart Reminders that automatically categorize tasks, and advanced Shortcuts with direct AI integration for workflow automation.

These on-device AI capabilities run entirely through Apple's Private Cloud Compute architecture, meaning sensitive data never leaves the device or Apple's secure cloud infrastructure — a privacy advantage Apple continues to emphasize against competitors relying on third-party AI backends.
